Cuba urges US to respect international will on blockade

GENEVA, Oct. 29 (MNA) – Cuba urged the US Government Wed. to respect the will of the international community, which almost unanimously defended the lifting of the blockade of the island imposed by Washington.

On Tuesday, 191 countries of the 193 UN members voted in favor of the Cuban resolution against the blockade, just the United States and Israel voted against.

Cuban Ambassador to the International Authorities, with headquarters in Geneva, Anayansi Rodriguez said at the World Trade Organization (WTO) that the resolution welcomed the reestablishment of the diplomatic relations between the governments of both nations and recognized the will expressed by President Barack Obama to work for the elimination of that measure.

She highlighted that it expressed concern because after the adoption of 23 consecutive resolutions on the issue, the economic, trade and financial blockade is still in force.

Rodriguez also said that the prolonged non-compliance by the United States regarding the dispute "Section 211 of the US Omnibus Appropriations Act 1998,"  answers illegally to the laws that shape the unfair and illegal blockade of the island imposed by that country.

Based on that section, it is prohibited that the US courts of brands and patents from the Caribbean nation, something that damages in a particular way the registration of the Cuban rum brand Havana Club, she said when speaking at the monthly ordinary meeting of the Disputes Settlement Body of the WTO.

The diplomat exhorted Washington to fulfill his legal obligations to the WTO by means of adopting immediately the relevant legislative measures.

She also reiterated the most sincere thanks by the Cuban people to the countries that every month speak at the WTO in favor of the conclusion of the dispute about the Section 211 and those that every year join their voices at the UN General Assembly for the elimination of the unfair and illegal blockade of Cuba.
